Frequently Asked Questions

Get quick, Shariah-backed answers to your Zakat calculation, Nisab, and asset questions. Learn how your contribution directly transforms children’s lives through education.

Zakat is an obligatory pillar of Islam required from every adult Muslim of sound mind whose net wealth meets or exceeds the minimum Nisab threshold for one full lunar year. It serves as a spiritual purification of wealth and a systematic means of supporting vulnerable members of society.

Nisab is the minimum benchmark of qualifying wealth a person must possess before Zakat becomes due. It is equivalent to either 87.48 grams (7.5 tola) of gold or 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) of silver. To determine eligibility, your total cash, precious metals, and business stock are evaluated against the current market value of these standard weights.

Zakat applies to wealth categorized as growth assets held across the lunar year. This includes cash in hand or bank accounts, gold, silver, investments, stocks intended for trade, and business inventory. Assets used strictly for personal living, such as your primary home, personal car, furniture, and daily clothing, are entirely exempt.

Commercial stock and merchandise intended for sale are evaluated at their current wholesale market value on the date of calculation, rather than their original purchase cost. Raw materials and finished goods are included, while business capital equipment, such as machinery, office furniture, store fixtures, and delivery vehicles are exempt.

READ Foundation channels 100% Shariah-compliant Zakat directly into educational welfare projects. Contributions cover school tuition fees, books, uniforms, classroom supplies, and essential learning support for verified orphan and vulnerable students, empowering them toward long-term self-sufficiency.

Yes. Deserving orphan students who lack financial support fall directly under the Quranic categories of Al-Fuqara (the poor) and Al-Masakin (the needy). Utilizing Zakat funds to cover their school tuition, books, uniforms, and educational welfare is fully Shariah-compliant.

Your Zakat Can Change a Child’s Life

Together, let’s make a lasting impact on the lives of these orphaned students through the gift of education.
